Austria’s liberal president, Alexander Van der Bellen, has proposed that women fight Islamaphobia by donning headscarves.
Muslim migrants are thickly embedded throughout Europe. Those whose asylum applications are rejected by Germany often bounce into neighboring Austria. Violent ghettos have sprung into existence. The E.U.’s initial generosity has dwindled. Politicians now almost universally agree that the number of fresh migrants should be constrained to a more manageable number.
Members of the fringe left, however, are still peddling a pro-Islam agenda. Why exactly does Van der Bellen believe that forcing women to cover themselves would change anyone’s opinion about conservative Islam? Islamaphobia, if it exists, arises from a wariness about Allah’s teachings. Most Westerners already know that Islam mistreats women. Secular women wearing headscarves would only underscore that point.
“I would rather no one wore a niqab. I would rather that no woman had effectively to disappear, from a young age, because that is the norm in her family. I would rather that no one had to go through the discomfort and social awkwardness of dealing with a woman whose face you cannot see,” Nesrine Malik wrote for the Telegraph.
“I would rather that Islam be purged of the niqab and all its permutations…As someone who grew up in Muslim countries, and who was forced to wear the niqab in my late teens when I moved from Sudan to Saudi Arabia, I found it an unpleasant and initially traumatic experience. For me, wearing a veil was at times uncomfortable, hot, stuffy, limiting and impractical.”
Women who were once forced to live under conservative Islam’s strict rule often report feelings similar to Malik’s. It makes no sense that the left is so keen to pressure women into Muslim experiences. Is hijab day going to be followed by national turban day? Yamaka day?
Radical Islam is slowly encroaching upon Western morals. It’s bad enough that millions of Muslim women are coerced into covering themselves every day without forcing Western women to share in their shame. For women, toying with being a Muslim is like playing with the idea of becoming a piece of property.
“In America, there is such fearfulness of talking about Muslim-on-Muslim crimes,” Dr. Phyllis Chesler, Ph.D., psychologist, author, and fellow at the Middle East Forum said. “This can’t be tolerated in the name of relativism, tolerance, anti-racism, diversity and political correctness.”
Muslim violence toward women is often more graphic than simply limiting their dress. So-called “honor killings” are common in Muslim-majority countries, and are occurring with increased regularity in western countries as well.
“Cases of honor killings and/or violence in the U.S. are often unreported because of the shame it can cause to the victim and the victim’s family,” Farhana Qazi, a former senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies on Terrorism, told Fox News. “Also, because victims are often young women, they may feel that reporting the crime to authorities will draw too much attention to the family committing the crime.”
The left obviously wouldn’t propose a mock “kill your daughter day.” Yet that horrible practice springs from the same value system that encourages women to dress ultra-modestly. It’s strange to pick and choose which symbols of oppression you’re okay with.
“Honor violence has been largely misclassified by law enforcement, by no fault of their own,” Detective Chris Boughey told reporters. “They simply didn’t know the signs and symptoms of honor-related violence. They do not have the training on how to effectively identify and investigate these cases. Some agencies won’t intervene even after these young women have come forward.”
“I am not quite sure when we as a country decided that it was more important to be politically correct than doing the right thing.”
Those who love freedom should reject all aspects of Islamic control.
