It is a heartbreaking scene in Northern California where more than 30 people have been killed so far in the devastating wildfires.
The forests and hillsides of surrounding areas have been ablaze for nearly a week, consuming massive amounts of fuel. The high winds in the area have fanned the flames into a nearly unstoppable inferno that is threatening an increasing number of homes.
The damage is so bad in some neighborhoods of Napa County that fire and rescue crews are unable to identify the remains of fire victims without using dental records and other forensic means, making the whole process take much longer.
Red Cross and other relief agencies have established services in the area to help the victims, but they are completely overwhelmed in what has been a disastrous year.
Volunteers have set up temporary shelters, and food and distribution points in nearby towns. Without the efforts of churches, schools, civic organizations and charities, the aftermath from this terrible fire could be so much worse. Anyone wishing to donate can do so here.
