A volunteer Santa Clause was arrested Monday morning after police discovered a crack pipe inside his vehicle. New Jersey Police say that Charles Smith, 64, was taken into custody around 2 am following a routine traffic stop along Route 46 in South Hackensack.
An officer spotted the pipe next to Smith’s Santa outfit, according to NBC 4 News.
Smith, a retiree from Pompton Lakes, was also in possession of empty bags of crack and heroin. Police discovered other unspecified drug paraphernalia and hypodermic needles during a subsequent search of Smith’s vehicle.
Smith, a former New Jersey Transit worker who volunteers at Toys for Tots, was charged with one count of drug possession and released on bond.
A request for comment to Toys for Tots by DailyMail.com was not immediately returned.
Messages to Smith asking for comment were also not immediately answered. It remains unclear if Smith has retained legal counsel in the case.
