Earlier this week, a patriot in Massachusetts noticed a man pulling several American flags out of the ground at a cemetery for veterans and then urinating on them, while a woman presumably acted as a lookout.
Upon seeing the couple’s action, he apparently took several pictures of two of them as well as the flags that they had desecrated and then reported them to local law enforcement officials, and broadcast the act on social media. The authorities have since purportedly launched an investigation into the matter to determine what sort of person would do this.
According to reports, the couple’s alleged conduct, which occurred at a war memorial dedicated to World War II in the Somerville Veterans Cemetery, was witnessed by George Gatteny, a 53-year-old man from Somerville, Massachusetts, who later recounted his experience in a Facebook post.
He then explained that he had been stopped behind a bus while driving down the road when he looked over at the cemetery and saw two young people grabbing several of the flags that were placed in front of the statue.
“The guy took the flags and tossed them behind the statue. What I saw him do next pushed me to a point where I said to myself ‘ENOUGH’. The guy started urinating on the flags. I quickly pulled over, got out of my car and headed over to them. The girl was standing by the gate (she must have been the lookout),” continued Gatteny in the online social media post.
“I started yelling at them to stop, asking him as I approached ‘what the hell he was doing’. He stopped urinating, pulled up his pants and started walking out of the memorial. Both of them walked up Broadway laughing. I walked behind them for awhile telling everyone I pass what they did. I went back to the memorial to see what damage was done (see photo),” he added, noting, “an older gentleman came over and thanked me for taking a stand. He told me he has 2 friends buried there.”
Gattney, however, apparently wasn’t satisfied. After confronting the couple, he found them walking down the street a short time later and took several pictures of them.
“What possible reason could they have for desecrating a WW2 Memorial??” he asked toward the end of his post.
Before concluding, he added, “there are consequences for our actions. They probably thought no [one] would do anything. They were WRONG!”
After posting the incident to social media, which promptly went viral, he then updated it with a note letting those who were so outraged that they suggested taking matters into their own hands know that he doesn’t condone such conduct.
In a second update, he mentioned that he has since met with a detective with the Somerville Police Department and that “they are all over this.”
Unsurprisingly, the duo’s actions left countless people absolutely infuriated, including Joseph Curtatone (D), the city’s mayor, who claimed that their act of vandalism was not only “despicable” but also offensive to the entire country.
Specifically, in a statement to reporters, Mayor Curtatone stated, “if these allegations are true, they are offensive not only to our community and our own veterans but to our entire nation and those who served and continue to serve.”
The couple’s decision to take the flags and urinate on them came amid numerous recent attacks on the Trump administration and his supporters.
While accepting an award from the Stonewall Young Democrats in Los Angeles, California a few days ago, for instance, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who many believe may have some serious mental health issues, bashed President Donald Trump and appeared to celebrate threatening those who support him.
In addition to slamming President Trump and his supporters, Rep. Waters also reiterated her call for impeachment and made it clear that she does not intend to stop at trying to remove President Trump from office. She also suggested Vice President Mike Pence and others will be targeted after.
Moreover, at another point during her tirade, Waters also spoke out against Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) for apologizing to Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the countless people who interrupted the hearings that were held last week to confirm him to the Supreme Court.
And several weeks before that, Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), who was formerly impeached as a federal judge for reportedly taking a bribe and committing perjury about doing so afterward, made a joke at a Florida campaign rally that it would be a “catastrophe” for someone to save the president’s life if he were drowning in the Potomac River.
Prior to that, former President Barack Obama seemed to bash Trump while giving a talk at an event in South Africa. Specifically, the former president spoke out against national leaders who “completely make stuff up” and suggested that undermining facts could lead to the “undoing” of democracy and presumably freedom.
He also claimed that his successor spends a significant amount of time doubling down on lies. Many, however, understand that he isn’t defending any lies but instead trying to correct false and misleading claims about his administration.
Although it’s not clear whether or not the couple was motivated by any of this hateful rhetoric, numerous people would agree that it may have likely played a role.
