From time to time, stories pop up that deal with a teacher having sex with a student. When the lady is in her late 20s and the teen in question is about 16 or 17, while in ill taste, many joke and say, “Why could that have not been me.” While such blue humor doesn’t erase the fact that any sex with any minor is something that should be enforced fully by the law, usually, those trysts don’t lead to lasting harm for either party.
That is not the case with the painfully serious offense that happened in Texas at the Arp School District, as Blasting News reports. Barbara Lynn Orpineda, 31, is free today on $250,000 bond “after being arrested on charges of sexual assault in connection with physical relationships with two students.” Keep in mind, she worked in an elementary school!
Orpineda is on administrative leave after it was confirmed by Arp County Police that the woman had sex with two students, acts which she captured on video. The age, grade level, and gender of the children who were molested were not given.
Complaints from parents in the district and even a student is what led to an investigation, documents reveal. On October 11th, the parents and the pupil are said to have “raised concerns” about ” activities with the students” which were happening with Orpineda.
Superintendent Dwight Thomas began investigating and called the demented counselor into his office. It was at this meeting that she was told that she was being put on administrative leave. Thomas then sent the data that he had collected over to Child Protective Services.
Authorities “arrested Orpineda Wednesday on the two counts of sexual assault and two counts of improper relationships between a teacher and a student,” according to police records.
Horrifyingly, her job was one that saw her working with very young students “ranging in age from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade.” In light of what Orpineda is charged with, these facts are quite disturbing.
On one website the disgraced counselor wrote that her outlook when doing her job was to remember that students were “multi-faceted human beings” and spoke of “appreciating their individual needs.” It enough to make a person’s skin crawl.
The also claimed to be driven to know what motivates a child. “Counselors provide a gateway to enhance a child’s self-esteem,” she wrote. She talked about “moving forward,” as well.
This is one of the more troublesome cases that have come to light and we are left to wonder just how many others like her stalk our children daily and have not been caught yet.
These are thoughts that no parent should have when their children go to school.
