When you go to college you are expected to learn and engage in active discussion. At least that is what the idea is. People are allowed to exchange their ideas and mindsets and come up with different solutions. Well someone should tell that to three professors at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs because they missed the memo.
There is an online class titled, “Medical Humanities in the Digital Age” being offered and three professors are teaching it. They decided to send an email to their students saying that man-made climate change is a topic that is not open to any sort of debate. To make matters worse, they also said that if you think otherwise then you don’t belong in that class.
“The point of departure for this course is based on the scientific premise that human introduced climate change is valid and occurring. We will not, at any time, debate the science of climate change, nor will the ‘other side’ of the climate change debate be taught or discussed in this course.”
These professors are essentially saying that it is going to be their way and nothing else. If you don’t like it then don’t take the course. So how in the world is that going to help people learn? Not to mention that this is indeed a “debate,” but they aren’t even going to talk about the other side?
That is suppressing the students to have their Freedom of Speech rights! There are some things that are not debatable. Those would be called facts. For example you cannot debate that water is wet. That is a fact of life. However climate change isn’t a fact yet. It is a debate. Debates are not facts!
What is even worse is that the students are being forced to either accept this opinion or drop the class entirely! How is that going to promote a learning environment when you can’t discuss something without being pressured to drop the class? You can’t, that’s how.
So who was responsible for this? Well professors, and liberals, Rebecca Laroche, Wendy Haggren, and Eileen Skahill signed the email. This was sent after students were worried about how they would fare in this specific course after watching the first online lecture about climate change and its impact.
So the students were worried about their grades and they addressed it like good students. Hey if you’re worried about something, you expect to have a conversation about it. Well instead of talking about it like normal human beings, the professors sent back, “Opening up a debate that 98% of climate scientists unequivocally agree to be a non-debate would detract from the central concerns of environment and health addressed in this course. If you believe this premise to be an issue for you, we respectfully ask that you do not take this course, as there are options within the Humanities program for face to face this semester and online next.”
You might think that there was no way this could get any worse. Well there was. In addition to saying that they would not be discussing this, the professors then decided to BAN online discussions BETWEEN THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES. So wait a minute, students aren’t going to be shown the other side of this topic, if they disagree with the professors then they are pressured to drop the class, AND they can’t discuss this with their peers? That isn’t learning. That’s a dictatorship.
As if this couldn’t get any worse, it does. The students are most likely going to be doing research papers and are going to require sources for that material. That’s fine and all, but here is where the liberal professors go WAY too far. The outside sources have to be APPROVED by the “Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”
So now they have to have outside sources approved? Now this would make sense if the student was unsure if the source was going to be good or not, but this is flat out insane. These liberal professors are trying to squash any sort of freethinking that goes on IN THE CLASSROOM. You know, that place that is supposed to encourage that type of behavior?
Naturally the professors wouldn’t return a comment to The College Fix. Also most courses usually suggest what the course is going to be about in either the syllabus or the class discussion. However in this particular class, NEITHER the class description nor the syllabus said that debate on climate change would not be allowed.
So these liberal professors essentially tricked the students into taking a course that suppresses their ability to debate a topic. Not to mention that if they were to debate this, the professors would encourage them to drop the class altogether. That is in no way, shape, or form a healthy classroom environment.
It is more like a dictatorship. Think about it. They are only getting one side of the debate, they can’t talk about it to the professors OR the other students, and if they do they are going to be asked to drop the class. That doesn’t promote students to talk at all. In fact it shelters them and only promotes the liberal agenda that these three professors have!
School is supposed to be a place to learn and encourage discussion. Well in one course in particular, that environment has been turned into a dictatorship. That is very dangerous to the learning ability of the students there.
There might be a way to stop this. If enough people know about what is happening at this college, then it can be stopped. So please, share this article. Don’t do it for yourself, but do it for the future! Help stop this dictatorship of a course!
