Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing some competition in her reelection bid by Lacy Johnson, a businessman turned politician, not to mention her current battles over perjury, immigration and tax fraud.
And after President Trump gave Johnson his endorsement, campaign donations soared.
Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s GOP challenger raised approximately 8 times more than usual after President Trump endorsed him.
“I’m Endorsing you also Lacy, you truly deserve it,” Trump shared on Twitter. “You are doing a great job, and Omar is a disaster who wants much higher taxes, hates our Military & our Vets, demands Open Borders, and is fighting to take away our great 2nd Amendment. Good luck Lacy!”
Johnson’s campaign experienced a significant jump in donations in the 24 hours following the endorsement. The campaign received more than 1,000 donations, totaling more than $35,000 in that time period, Johnson’s campaign manager, Anton Lazzaro, told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday. The fundraising total is about 8 times the amount he regularly receives over the same time period, while the average donation was $33.
“We’re honored and absolutely thrilled to have received the endorsement from the President. Lacy is the voice desperately needed in communities like Minneapolis to spread Pres. Trump’s message and broaden his electorate into new areas and demographics of our nation,” Lazzaro said.
Despite the boom in donations, the Johnson campaign is still $1.8 million behind Omar’s funding totals.
[Many people wonder where all that money is coming from…. Surely not donation amounts of $33 each?]
Johnson has been promoting himself as a commonsense conservative who will “fight against radical-leftist Ilhan Omar.”
The GOP also endorsed Johnson, who promises to give “100% support of President’s Trump economic policies and record-breaking results that leave no community behind as the policies of [the] previous administration.”
