In a disturbing report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture was allowed to buy dozens of cats from the Chinese meat market and dogs from other areas, and then use their bodies as food for other kittens.
The Obama administration allowed the practice as late as 2015.
The New York Post reported:
The USDA bought dozens of cats from Chinese meat markets, butchered the felines — and then fed their parts to healthy kittens at a Maryland lab for twisted experiments, according to a disturbing new watchdog report.
The agency also fed cats with the hearts, brains and tongues of dogs obtained from shelters in Brazil, while body parts harvested from stray pussies in Ethiopia were given to lab mice, the White Coat Waste Project’s report claims.
“It’s crazy,” Jim Keen, a former USDA scientist who co-authored the report, told NBC News. “Cannibal cats, cats eating dogs — I don’t see the logic.”
The experiments supposedly studied toxoplasmosis, a common parasitic infection that causes food-borne illness.
However, cats don’t naturally eat other cats. Moreover, Americans don’t eat cats and dogs, despite the practices in other countries.
The report stated the tests were “outdated, wasteful, and unnecessary.”
Moreover, once the kittens had been fed the cat and dog parts, these animals were then slaughtered.
Rather than allowing the otherwise healthy kittens who survived the treatment to be adopted, the USDA simply killed them.
“The White Coat Waste Project is pushing legislation called the Kittens in Traumatic Testing Ends Now act, which would cut taxpayer funding for the USDA’s cat experiments.
“The fact that the USDA has been rounding up pets and other innocent dogs and cats in foreign countries —including at Chinese meat markets condemned by Congress — killing them and feeding them to lab cats back here in the States is simply disgusting and unjustifiable.”
The USDA declined to comment about the practice.
Many people are furious that the government sanctioned such disgusting activity, using taxpayer money.
