American sports have always had a sense of nationalistic pride in them. Whether it’s the playing of the National Anthem before every game, or having members of the military attend the games, sports and a nation’s pride go hand in hand. Unfortunately that changed late last year when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick turned nationalism into a political statement.
The free agent is still looking for a job after he decided to kneel for the National Anthem. Kaepernick’s actions created a massive controversy, which liberals were all too happy to support, as they have become increasingly anti-American. Now the sports scene has shifted from football to baseball, yet the same liberal views are being presented.
Lead NBC Sports baseball writer Craig Calcaterra sent a tweet out at 5:00 in the morning on Sunday April 16, 2017, with a picture of the new Atlanta Braves stadium. It was the home opener for the team, so they had a giant American flag out on the field, which is customary for home and season openers. However, it wasn’t sitting well with him. Calcaterra said, “‘Will you keep politics out of sports, please. We like sports to be politics-free.’”
Outside of the fact that baseball’s most common nickname is “America’s pastime,” there really isn’t any politics in the sport. Most people debate which teams are better, but they never start talking about politics. The only way that the sport becomes political is when people like Calcaterra start saying that it is.
People on the left are so anti-American that simply having the American flag on the field is a “political” statement. As bad as that statement is, the writer didn’t stop there. In response to the first tweet, someone by the name of Matthew Weymar asked, “How is the flag political?…” It was a good question, and drew a response from the writer, just not in the way that people were hoping for. Calcaterra followed up with yet another anti-American statement.
Maybe a flag, in and of itself isn't always political. A two-acre flag with a military flyover is saying something very specific, however.

“Maybe a flag, in and of itself isn’t always political. A two-acre flag with a military flyover is saying something very specific however.” What is it saying, look how great this nation is? Once again, liberals are showing that anything resembling pride in the United States shouldn’t be accepted. More fans started getting in on the argument and asking how loving the country is a political statement, to which the writer concluded with another insult against the nation.
Calcaterra was responding to fans tweeting at him when the subject of the American flag was brought up. The writer had this to say about the American flag. “I never said the flag itself was. It’s a piece of fabric. People use it in a lot of ways. Sports teams and leagues included.” Apparently the American flag is “just a piece of fabric.” That is sure to go over well with people who serve, or have served, in the armed forces.
This is exactly where the Kaepernick storyline left off. Remember, the entire NFL season was filled with people refusing to stand for the National Anthem. It eventually escalated into saying that the American flag was just a piece of fabric, much like this writer was saying. It’s honestly amazing how showing love and pride of the United States is enough to set liberals off.
The tweet drew instant criticism from one of the fans. Another Twitter user by the name of louiswu, sent a message back to Calcaterra, saying, “Sad: flag is much more than piece of fabric.” That is the sentiment shared by many people. If that wasn’t the case, then why do people get so angry when they see American enemies stomping on the flag like it was nothing?
Liberals are too quick to make sure that everything has a political stance. Thanks to the actions of Kaepernick and the liberal media, anything that shows an ounce of American pride is to be slammed. Although if there is any consolation, it’s that people that have associated themselves with Kaepernick and the liberal media have quickly rethought their stances.
Some have even lost their jobs because of it. A defensive player that was on the Indianapolis Colts, Antonio Cromartie, was actually cut because of his decision to kneel before the National Anthem. Naturally, people are quick to say that he was cut because of the way he played. However, at the time the Colts were struggling on defense and really needed all the help they could get. That wasn’t going to take the place of American values though.
Speaking of Kaepernick, despite being known as a player that is a dual-threat quarterback and led his team to a Super Bowl appearance, he still doesn’t have a contract. The reasoning behind that is because the NFL owners are getting back at him for the way he handled himself during the regular season. He even said that he wouldn’t kneel for the anthem anymore, but that hasn’t helped him get another contract offer.
Unfortunately, Kaepernick’s stance from the NFL has now affected baseball writers. Apparently honoring the American flag is a “political” statement and doesn’t have a place in baseball. That’s what happens when liberals try and insert politics into everything imaginable. Is showing pride in the United States really something that has to be monitored? According to NBC baseball writers, the answer is yes.
