A mother in Ozark, Wisconsin has started a social media frenzy after she was arrested for child endangerment. Apparently, she allowed her 9-year-old son to ride on top of the minivan as the pair brought home a plastic pool she’d just purchased.
According to court documents, 28-year-old Amber Schmunk was trying to take the pool home to Saukville, but it wouldn’t fit inside the vehicle. Police said that she, “decided to put the pool in top of the minivan, but had no way to strap it down.”
That’s when she had the genius idea of letting her son climb aboard the roof and hold the pool down while she drove the few blocks home. Another driver happened to see the strange sight and contacted police. Schmunk told officers that she had only allowed the boy to ride “for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds.”
She also stated that she thought it would be okay, because her father had “let her do things like that when she was that age.”
However, she also told police that she thought it was safe because she used a strap to secure her son to the roof of the van. How would that be possible if she didn’t have a way to strap the pool down in the first place?
The entire incident is both scary and interesting. Before the age of over-protectiveness, children pretty much had to overcome all sorts of dangers just to make it to adulthood. Many people remember when metal cribs, lead based paint, and no seat belts were simply part of life.
Lawn darts, riding in the back of pickup trucks, and an age without hand sanitizer did pose more risks, but nowadays Muslim terrorists living next door isn’t considered as dangerous eating too many Twinkies.
The mother’s claim that her father allowed to do “stuff” like that may be completely true. Likewise, the boy probably thought the entire idiotic idea was awesome.
Although the mother should have known better than to place her son on the roof of the minivan, perhaps some of the blame can rest on public schools that have jettisoned logic learning from the curriculum. Children aren’t taught to reason anymore, they are brainwashed into believing that white people are bad and the founding fathers were as atrocious as Hitler.
Schmunk has been charged with a second degree reckless endangerment, which is a felony. Apparently, police located her as she pulled into her sister’s driveway, after she had folded the pool and placed it in the van.
The charges carry up to 10 years in prison, but when considering that many child rapists and pedophiles don’t get that long in jail, many people feel the charge is excessive.
However, what about people who actually do place their children in danger by training them as jihadists? Would such activity merit the same punishment? Or people who beat children, but get away with it in the name of religion?
It is not known who called the police or how long Schmunk drove with the boy on top of the van. It would be interesting to discover if a personal vendetta was involved.
Regardless of the possible penalty, Schmunk did make a stupid, quite dangerous decision. When considered honestly, every parent in the world has probably done something that in hindsight seems ridiculously irresponsible. However, that doesn’t clear her of the crime.
Although some people hope that she’ll be delivered to jail and her son given to strangers to raise, others hope that some type of counseling might be ordered. She obviously didn’t think about the danger, and was more focused on bringing home the plastic pool.
Neighbor Barbara Sellin told local reporters, “That woman needs to think about the safety of her children. To put a kid on top of the car is beyond ridiculous.”
For her insane actions on September 9, Schmunk will have her initial court appearance next week.
