There are probably few days less somber than 9/11. As a country, we were attacked and every year, we come together again to mourn as a whole. However, there are exceptions. People filled with such hatred, anger, or bias that they simply can’t see why we grieve for the thousands of lives lost that day.
Columbia University students came face to face with such a person yesterday as their 9/11 memorial was vandalized by an unidentified man. Aanand Shah, a ROTC cadet at the university, caught the whole incident on tape. He also confronted the man.
“Angered, I ran over and asked him what he was doing, and was laughed at with no proper response. I asked a nearby Public Safety officer what could be done, but he was well within his rights to protest, so I recorded the video.”
Shah recorded the man pulling up about 50 of the American flags and dumping them in the trash. But he wasn’t satisfied and returned to collect more. The concerned student and four other witnesses began replacing the flags. When others saw what was happening, they joined in as well.
Ari Boosalis is the president of the College Republican chapter at Columbia. He reports that he is not surprised at the incident because the campus has been known to shun American values ever since the election;
“September 11th is a day where all Americans no matter their race, creed, or political affiliation should come together to remember those who have fallen and risked their lives for our safety. This event is by no means political, but a day of remembrance and tribute, especially to the first responders who gave up their lives in order to save others.”
Unfortunately, this incident is not isolated or unique to this year following the election. Last year Conservative Daily Post reported on a similar incident at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
