Since Donald Trump became the President of the United States, it seems like the political left in the country have become more and more unhinged with each passing month. Surely, instigating comments from leftists like Maxine Waters, have not helped that situation.
Now, after Waters called on democrats to get in the faces of republicans and let them know they aren’t welcome, a Castro Valley man pulled a switchblade on a republican Congressional candidate in California. Though the candidate was (thankfully) uninjured, after tackling the deranged man, the assaulter’s mom and lawyer are claiming that the assailant, who yelled “I’m gonna kill you” at the candidate, is somehow the victim in all this.
According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, September 9, at around 3:45 p.m., a number of deputies working at the Castro Valley Fall Festival were alerted about a possible incident.
Namely, they were informed that there had been a knife attack at one of the booths in the area.
Witnesses to this attack said that a man, later identified as 35-year-old Castro Valley resident Farzad Fazeli, approached republican Congressional candidate Rudy Peters, who is vying against incumbent democrat Eric Swalwell to represent California’s 15th Congressional District.
According to numerous accounts, during the ‘incident,’ Fazeli pulled out a switchblade knife, and attempted to stab candidate Peters.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Ray Kelly said that, thankfully, the knife malfunctioned, and the candidate, a Navy veteran, fought with his assailant.
At some point, the attacker decided to flee the scene, perhaps after finding that his prey was not as weak as he had hoped.
However, deputies who were at the festival to keep the peace managed to find Fazeli, and took him into custody.
Alameda County Sheriffs arrested him on charges of felony assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon, and possession of a switchblade, and booked him into the county’s detention center, Santa Rita Jail, where the assailant, who lists his occupation as ‘cashier’ on social media, awaits his arraignment.
In an interview with local media, Peters talked about the assault, and what he saw as it happened.
He said that when Fazeli had the knife out (which failed to deploy) he was yelling “I’m going to kill you motherf***er,” and that he could see him trying to activate the knife’s blade with his thumb.
Peters said that the encounter began with verbal threats from the assailant, who then picked up a coffee cup and tried to throw it at Peters and his family.
At that point, the candidate came around the table to try and wrestle the unhinged man to the ground, and Fazeli chose that moment to pull a knife on the veteran.
Yesterday, the assailant made his first appearance in court, concerning the charges of possession of a switchblade and threatening to commit great bodily injury or death.
However, the assailant’s mother and attorney say that the knife-wielding maniac is the victim, and that he was at the point where he “was afraid for his life and afraid for his health and safety.”
Defense attorney Frederick Remer argued that the knife was never opened, though witnesses and Peters pointed out that it was not for lack of trying.
His mother, Dolly Adams, was at the festival as well, working at the democrat booth.
Self defense law generally holds that someone cannot provoke an assault, by, say, throwing a coffee cup at a person and their family, and then claim self-defense.
Eric Swalwell actually tweeted in support of Peters, and said he was glad that the assailant was arrested.
Swalwell also said that it is never okay to use violence to settle political disagreements, a message that it seems the political left in America, and their allies like Antifa, would be well-served in heeding.
Peters said that the entire incident caused him to worry about his voters and constituency, and what could happen to them at open events held in public places.
Thankfully, the candidate wasn’t hurt. However, many people agree it’s time that the left realizes they cannot win debates by suppressing them with violence, or the threat thereof, no matter how much they might not like it.
