The Governor of Guam, Eddie Calvo, has come forward with his appreciation of Trump’s approach to the North Korean threat. Calvo is proud to be an American citizen and is happy that his President is willing to fight for their safety. Guam has become the center of attention around the world as North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un has declared them a target of attack.
Kim’s recent announcements to strike South Korea, Japan, Guam, and the Western Coast of the United States has had many eyes around the globe glued to news websites and programs. However, these are pretty standard threats that everyone in the western world has become accustomed to. That does not mean that these threats are not to be taken seriously, it is just that many have become numb to the threats made by this rounded tyrant.
It has become increasingly more dangerous to seek diplomatic relations with North Korea as every attempt has ended with the Kim regime threatening our nation as well as our allies. Their unrelenting attack on the West has many fed up with this kind of irrational behavior because it can easily lead to World War III if tensions do not deescalate. Armies have been mobilizing as well as fleets in the Pacific to try to deter the North Korean military from making any rash or sudden moves. Kim is using these threats to gain leverage at the international table, similar to Mao’s threat in the 70s.
Unfortunately, this situation comes down to hypothetical situations as it would be impossible to fully determine the motives and outcomes with the players involved. We know that North Korea has become able to launch Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) as well as miniaturize warheads in order to equip them to the ICBMs. We do not know the full capabilities of their range as well as their primary targets. We do know that they need food and medical supplies for their people so it is possible that they are in need of leverage in order to make a trade. This is the most likely outcome but also one of the least desirable.
If the United States just gives into the demands from a nation that is essentially holding the world hostage, then it will not be long until chaos ensues as other nuclear nations demand the same. This is not diplomacy as what basically surmounts to a terrorist state is making demands and threats or else they will do something evil. This is actually an exact situation that James Bond would find himself in as some evil dictator in a remote part of the world is demanding some compensation in order to not plunge the world into chaos. This situation becomes more dire everyday but Calvo is confident that Trump will make the right move.
Calvo’s belief in Trump is not in vain as the threats from North Korea have been met with an even larger threat. Trump has promised to meet North Korea with Fire and Fury if these threats do not cease and Calvo could not be happier. There are close to 200,000 US citizens on the island of Guam and the governor is pleased that Trump has not abandoned them. He is also worried for the citizens of Hawaii as that state’s ports and airfields are critical to our control over the Pacific. Calvo believes that Trump is not only right to make threats back but that he needs to actually follow through with them.
With the world’s eyes on Guam and the rest of the Pacific, leaders like Calvo and Trump are needed to assure the hardworking taxpaying citizens that the government is indeed worried for their safety. These leaders are even worried for the citizens of Japan and South Korea as a catastrophic event taking place on the Manchurian Peninsula would leave countless millions dead.
However, Japan has pledged that if the North Koreans strike for Guam, then they are confident that their anti-rocket missiles could knock it out of the sky. This reassurance for the people of Guam is critical because now more than ever they must believe that the Allies of the Pacific must stand together against the North Korean Threat.
The most likely outcome of this situation is probably that both North Korea and the United States of America are doing a bit of geopolitical saber rattling. The North Koreans need leverage so they can negotiate on an international scale and the USA needs to maintain its hegemony as well as protect its allies.
Top North Korean officials must realize that there is no good outcome for them or their people and so this must be seized upon. Perhaps the President should declare amnesty and citizenship for any top North Korean military personnel who defects with vital information, that way Kim’s support is stripped away from him. A new cold war could be taking place as neither side is sure if a pre-emptive strike is happening.
