Many on the left don’t seem to understand the dangers associated with illegal immigration. Because of this, they actively push to try to protect those living in the country illegally. One of the ways they do this is by establishing “sanctuary cities.” These cities are typically run by liberals who refuse to enforce federal immigration laws, putting the lives of others at risk.

In an attempt to make America safer, the Department of Justice (DOJ) claimed that they were ramping up their crack-down on sanctuary cities. Specifically, they announced that they will only be giving federal grants to “cities and states that comply with federal law, allow federal immigration access to detention facilities, and provide 48 hours notice before they release an illegal alien wanted by federal authorities,” sparking outrage.

One of the people most upset by the announcement was Eric Garcetti, the Mayor of Los Angeles, a well-known sanctuary city. During a recent interview, he doubled down on his plan to resist President Donald Trump. According to him, Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration somehow makes people less safe. Because of this, he doesn’t plan on doing anything about the policies in his city that protect undocumented aliens.

“What they’re asking the city to do is in violation of the Constitution,” argued Garcetti while speaking to reporters. “We will not change what we are doing and our values are not for sale,” he continued, noting, “this decision was more of the kind of ideological rhetoric that actually makes us less safe.”

Alex Comisar, Garcetti’s press secretary, added, “Mayor Garcetti believes that cities have a right to create sensible policies that keep our neighborhoods safe and protect our residents. The Byrne Justice Assistance grants are an important part of keeping our neighborhoods safe from gangs and other serious criminals, and we will continue to fight for our access to those resources.”

Garcetti’s comments come shortly after he issued a directive banning city officials from “partnering with ICE to enforce civil immigration law” He claimed that doing so would help “build public trust in all communities in Los Angeles.”

To clarify his reasoning behind the directive, he told his constituents, “I have a longstanding commitment to the immigrants in Los Angeles…My most solemn responsibility as Mayor is to keep all of our city’s people safe.”

According to Garcetti, immigration is vital to California’s economy. “Since our City’s founding, Los Angeles has always been a city of immigrants,” explained Garcetti, noting, “today, more than 1.5 million residents of our city are foreign-born, and nearly two of every three Angelenos are either immigrants or children of immigrants. Our immigrants are the engine of the Los Angeles economy, representing 47% of the employed workforce in our city and more than half of the self-employed workforce.”

But Garcetti’s reasoning is completely absurd. First of all, he doesn’t distinguish between legal immigration and illegal immigration. While it may be true that legal immigration benefitted California, the same cannot necessarily be said about illegal immigration.

Also, enforcing our country’s immigration laws do not make us less safe, it actually makes us safer. This is because, if our country’s laws were enforced, dangerous criminals living in the country would be deported to prevent them from committing additional crimes. On top of that, securing our border would make sure that they don’t come back.

Fortunately, Jeff Sessions, the current United States Attorney General (AG), understands just how much of a national security risk sanctuary cities really are. “So-called sanctuary policies make all of us less safe because they intentionally undermine our laws and protect illegal aliens who have committed crimes,” stated Sessions.

“These policies also encourage illegal immigration and even human trafficking by perpetuating the lie that in certain cities, illegal aliens can live outside the law,” he continued, adding, “we must encourage these ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions to change their policies and partner with federal law enforcement to remove criminals.”

Withholding federal dollars appears to be one of the many tactics that Sessions plans on using to get people to start obeying the law. If Garcetti continues to ignore federal law, however, he should consider having him arrested and thrown in jail. Doing so will send a powerful message to the rest of the country that protecting illegal immigrants has consequences.
