Being the founder of one of the largest social media platforms in the world could cause someone to develop grandiose thoughts. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is undeniably successful, but has it gone to his head?
Well, we probably can’t blame him if it has. We could even look beyond a little greed if he wasn’t so politically biased and fair to everyone. Zuckerberg seems to be suffering from a little more than just an inflated ego. A famous quote reminds us, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Zuckerberg is in the process of basically selling out but in a way that is far more dangerous than just being money hungry. We are now talking about assisting in the oppression and manipulation of millions. One of Facebook’s core mission statements reads: “to make the world more open and connected.” They really need to add that the mission is defined by Zuckerberg for Zuckerberg, innocent citizens be damned.
In 2011, it was discovered that Facebook had agreed with officials in Israel to censor content that officials deemed to be improper. The Israeli government had pushed to monitor and censor Facebook content in response to a wildly successful movement called Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS).
BDS is a global non-violent movement that is working to expose Israeli human rights violations against Palestinians. Thanks to Mark Zuckerberg and his deal with the Israeli government, people in Israel can no longer carry out BDS activities on Facebook in Israel.
Apparently when Zuckerberg said that Facebook would help people “discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them,” he didn’t mean it if it interfered with making money.
Unsurprisingly, given his past relationships with liberals, Facebook now censors alternative news networks. These networks were the same ones who criticized Hillary Clinton and that Obama accused of publishing fake news. Of course, all of that was a distraction from the fact that Trump and the Republicans had beaten them badly in the elections.
Now we come to 1.4 million Chinese people who have, at the very most, limited social media use on the internet. The Chinese communist government went after Facebook after activists used the site to communicate in an attempted break-away of the western province of Xinjiang in 2009.
Ever since, China has restricted access to Facebook. Currently, Chinese citizens living on the mainland, who wish to access Facebook, use a technology known as a Virtual Private Network.
Zuckerberg has been trying to maneuver his way back in ever since. He can’t stand the thought of all those people who could be using his platform and aren’t. We now know that he is willing to sacrifice their rights to do this.
Three of Facebook’s employees, both present and past, have exposed the company’s new censorship policy which will soon be rolled out in China.
Since the ban in 2009, Zuckerberg has been meeting top Chinese officials, including the President, Xi Jinping. He has paid many visits to the country, met top internet executives, and is said to be learning Mandarin.
According to the recent allegations by the employees, trips to reassure China were not the extent of Zuckerberg’s plans, either. Facebook has been quietly developing software to suppress posts from appearing in people’s news feeds in specific geographic areas. Meaning Conservatives are being targeted now more than ever!
The employees said the software was created to specifically help Facebook get back into China. It is rumored that this started after one of Zuckerberg’s meetings with authorities where it was suggested that Facebook should develop a tool to suppress news that the Chinese government might consider inappropriate.
Apparently, this infringement of people’s right was agreeable to him. Zuckerberg returned to Silicon Valley, ordering his engineers to develop software to satisfy the demands of the communist officials.
While their boss was happily aiding communism, many of his employees weren’t willing. The 3 employees who came forward said their main concern is that the software developed for China could lead to more demands to suppress content from other countries.
They also revealed that in the summer of 2016, several Facebook employees who were working on the Chinese suppression left the company. The employees are said to have quit because what they were doing was against the company’s and their personal values.
Those who didn’t leave questioned senior executives about the rationale of the new scheme and didn’t relent when they weren’t given adequate answers. Unable to convince the employees, senior executives asked Zuckerberg himself to provide an answer.
Zuckerberg was reported as saying that Facebook’s China plans were promising, due to the business potential in the country. Zuckerberg was quoted by the employees, “It’s better for Facebook to be a part of enabling conversation, even if it’s not yet the full conversation.”
As mentioned previously, this isn’t the first time Facebook censored content. The company has met government demands on censorship in Pakistan, Russia and Turkey. The company blocked over 55,000 pieces of content in over 20 countries in the last 6 months of 2015.
This doesn’t appear to be just making agreements so citizens can continue to use Facebook. This, and possibly the others, is Zuckerberg aiding in agenda that oppresses millions.
Should he be allowed to have this much power with no accountability?
