The Senate has the all-important task of coming together and either confirming or denying the presidential appointments. This has been a rule since the Constitution of the United States was founded. For a presidential appointment to be confirmed, they had to have the approval of at least 60 Senators.
The Democrats changed that rule back in 2013 when they invoked the “nuclear option.” This allowed a simple majority to approve a presidential appointment, meaning only 51 senators had to approve it, instead of the 60. That also meant that it would be harder to deny a presidential appointment.
Now that President Donald Trump is in the Oval Office, this nuclear option is working to benefit him immensely, much to the Democrats dismay. So instead of sucking it up and moving on, they have moved to degrading and attacking some of the president’s appointments for his Cabinet.
Senator Elizabeth Warren was in the middle of speaking to the Senate when she was referencing a letter that was attacking Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump’s appointment for Attorney General. That was when the Republicans had had enough of Warren and promptly silenced her from speaking out anymore.
The Senate voted, 49-43, in favor of silencing Warren and stopping her from continuing her floor speech. This was a new low from the Democrats, considering that Sessions is still a Senator and the rules forbid going after Senators, either directly or indirectly.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the final decision to silence Warren’s attacks. “The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama.” He then demanded the vote to punish Warren for speaking out.
McConnell said that Senator Warren had violated the rules once, was even given a warning AND an explanation about the rules, and “nevertheless she persisted,” which resulted in the second violation. That second violation is what caused McConnell to act and effectively punish her.
Democrats were outraged at the silencing of Warren. Warren herself said that her offending comments were quoting the late wife of Martin Luther King Jr. when she originally objected to Sessions’ nomination to a federal judgeship back in the 1980s. However that still violated the rules as Warren was still indirectly going after Sessions.
“I am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate.” They are, just not when they are used to attack a Senator that is going for a presidential appointment. It’s surprising that Warren doesn’t know that.
The letter at the time had King accusing Sessions of “a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters.” That’s an attack on character if I ever saw.
It continued by saying, “Mr. Sessions has used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens in the district he now seeks to serve as a federal judge,” King wrote. Again, that’s a blatant attack on Sessions that is indeed a violation of the rules.
A senator should know the rules of the chamber, and yet Warren continued to claim that she wasn’t attacking or questioning the conduct of Sessions. She has schemed and lied for the last time against Sessions however, as she is unable to speak out against him anymore.
Democrats attempted to stop the vote on punishment and that was when Warren threw one last attempt, a hail-Mary, to continue speaking out. “Why don’t you just let me finish?”
It’s simple. You violated the rules TWICE. If you break the rules, then you have to suffer the consequences. The fact that you were warned about this after the first rule violation, and continued to go after Sessions is either stupidity or intentional. Nevertheless, Warren was warned and she needed to suffer the consequences.
If you have a problem with the punishment, then maybe next time don’t continue to do what you did! It’s really that simple. However these are Democrats we are talking about and they are either going to protest the decision or complain about it instead of accepting the results.
Democrats have a hard time accepting facts and rules however, as they have routinely said that they were not going to accept Donald Trump as the new president of the United States. They have called Trump an “illegitimate” president, because of the rumors that the Russians helped get Trump elected. However there hasn’t been any proof of that whatsoever. That folks, is indeed a fact.
The Democrats have been so twisted that they are making sure to include every single minority in their party. It has gone too far however, as they are now calling for a no white policy moving forward. They are getting rid of whites in their party just to focus on the minorities in the country. Apparently including everyone doesn’t actually mean everyone.
Share this article to show that Senator Warren decided she was going to be a rule breaker and continue to blast Senator Sessions. Considering the fact that she broke the rules and was made aware of her violation, Warren deserved to be punished. Those saying she was treated unfairly don’t understand that actions have consequences.
