Earlier this week, an illegal immigrant and his friend were arrested in Frederick, Maryland for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl while a third person, who is not yet in custody, recorded it on video. While being questioned by police, the alleged rapists told police that they were ordered to do so by a younger female acquaintance.
According to reports, Victor Gonzalez-Gutierres, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, and Edgar Chicas-Hernandez, his 17-year-old friend, were both recently arrested and charged with “kidnapping, first-degree rape, sodomy, and first- and second-degree assault” after an 18-year-old woman showed went to local police and reported that she had been kidnapped and raped by them while walking home late at night.
Specifically, the unidentified woman told police that she had been walking home shortly after midnight when someone grabbed her hair from behind. Two men then surrounded her and began hitting her while a third person pulled out a knife and cut her with it. They then dragged her by the hair to a nearby vehicle and drove to an apartment building in the area.
Once at the apartment, two of the suspects, identified by the victim, who recognized them from school, as Gonzalez-Gutierres and Chicas-Hernandez, held her against her will for several hours and repeatedly raped her while the third suspect, whose identity remains unknown because he had his face covered, stood by and filmed the sexual assault. During the assault, they reportedly told her that they were simply following orders from a younger female acquaintance.
After taking turns raping the helpless woman, the suspects then drove her back to her apartment and set her free. Before letting her go, however, they warned her that if she went to the police, “next time…will be worse.” Despite being threatened, she decided to go to the police anyway. Upon learning about the assault, officers immediately launched an investigation. During the investigation, Gonzalez-Gutierres and Chicas-Hernandez were brought into custody by police. While being questioned, they confessed and were subsequently arrested.
Once Gonzalez-Gutierres was placed behind bars, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents filed an immigration detainer, which “serve as a legally-authorized request…[for officers] to maintain custody of an alien for up to 48 hours so that ICE may assume custody for removal purposes,” against him. This basically means that they’re planning on deporting him so that he can’t harm anyone else in America.
After confessing to their crimes, the two captured suspects mentioned that they were simply doing what a younger female acquaintance had asked them to do. This was later confirmed by investigators who obtained copies of online conversations that showed the assailants being told what to do by a younger female believed to be the mastermind behind the whole attack. In one of the conversations, the suspected mastermind reportedly went sent someone a message offering them footage of the attack in exchange for “one night of pleasure.”
Even though the police have evidence against the younger girl, while being questioned by police, she denied any involvement in the attack and insisted that the assailants were trying to frame her. As of now, it’s unclear whether she’s currently in police custody.
Unsurprisingly, investigators were shocked by the details of the crime. “This is very, very rare in my experience,” explained Detective Joe Palkovic, an assistant supervisor in the Frederick Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, while speaking with reporters. “The violence of it and the nature of the crime, the fact that this involves someone laying in wait, kidnapping the victim and then taking her to a separate location to rape her, is very rare,” he noted.
Sergeant Andrew Alcorn of the Frederick Police Department added, “we’re looking into all possible gang affiliations and ties to see if the suspects have or had any ties to local gangs or transnational gangs. This is not a common occurrence in Frederick. It’s a very quiet town and we like to keep it that way, and when an incident like this occurs we put all our available resources into solving it.”
When asked about the fate of the third suspect who filmed the sexual assault, Lieutenant Clark Pennington, the Commander of the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division, mentioned that while he currently hasn’t been charged, this will likely change as the investigation continues. Specifically, he said, “the third, unidentified man mentioned in the charging documents has not been charged…As the investigation continues, however, we do anticipate there being additional charges in this case.”
As incidents like this clearly demonstrate, people must not be allowed to live in this country illegally, regardless of how old they are. While it’s true that not everyone living here illegally will commit additional crimes, the few who do ruin it for everyone else. This is because, since letting them stay could lead to someone being hurt or killed, it’s simply not worth the risk.
