It’s not exactly a secret that former President Barack Obama was against the Second Amendment. He did whatever he possibly could to implement as much gun control as possible during his eight-year reign. Whether this was by executive action or putting anti-gun politicians in positions of power, it was clear what Obama was trying to do.
Now that President Trump is in charge, the Second Amendment is safe for at least four, and hopefully eight, years. He took significant action late last week. The Trump administration had asked Obama’s Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, to hand in his resignation papers. The now-former Surgeon General was a big advocate of gun control, meaning that he had to go.
Back on December 15, 2014, Dr. Murthy was confirmed to the Surgeon General position. The date of the confirmation is interesting to note, as it was nearly two years to the date of the Newtown, CT school shooting. Dr. Murthy had rose to the position running on a platform based on his “political activism,” specifically based on his gun control stance.
Naturally, there was a tremendous opposition to the confirmation vote, particularly from gun rights groups like the NRA. At the time, there was also opposition from the Republicans, which made it hard to predict if Murthy could have been confirmed or not. Unfortunately, he was, but only after some isle hopping occurred.
There were Democrats that weren’t in favor of Dr. Murthy. One of them was Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV). Despite the fact that the Senator in favor of gun control, the soon-to-be-confirmed Surgeon General’s stances on guns made Manchin look the other way. Unfortunately, a Republican from Illinois, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) voted yes in place of the West Virginia Senator.
Dr. Murthy was eventually confirmed, and that gave Americans someone in the Surgeon General position that viewed gun policy as a “health care issue.” That meant any sort of pro-gun control policies were going to be touted as helpful for health care and the overall well-being of the nation.
The now-former Surgeon General had continued his support for gun control as recently as early June of last year. He spoke out on the issue, but continued to say that gun violence was still a public health issue.
“I got into some trouble for saying gun violence is a public health issue. A little bit of trouble. But you know, I was stating what I think is the obvious, and I think most people in the country understand, which is that far too many people die from gun violence. And in my book, every single death from gun violence is a tragedy because it was preventable. It’s unacceptable.”
However, what the former Surgeon General fails to understand is that CRIMINALS do not obey the law! Look at places like Chicago, which have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. The city is overrun by gang members who don’t care about the law and will shoot regardless of what is going on.
Not to mention that there can be as many gun-control laws possible, but the Second Amendment allows Americans to have the right to bear arms. They have a right to wield a weapon if they want, provided they are going to obey the law.
Dr. Murthy has since been removed from the post and was replaced by the Deputy Surgeon General. That was Rear Arm. Sylvia Trent-Adams. It’s too early to tell how she will pan out, but there are two guarantees from this. Considering that President Trump has yet to name a replacement, it’s possible that he considers her a good choice. Also, the Second Amendment has seen another victory thanks to the Trump Administration.
Unfortunately, the Second Amendment is also being attacked by Republicans. During the time that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was pushing his healthcare bill, there was a lot of fine print in it. One of the provisions of the bill was aimed at taking away Second Amendment rights from American citizens. Thankfully this bill wasn’t passed, but this just proves that even Republicans might go against gun rights.
There are plenty of reasons why the Second Amendment has to stay. There was an incident in Oklahoma last month where robbers thought they could break into a house and get away with it. They had brass knuckles and were threatening to cause major damage. That was when the homeowner’s son came down with an AR-15 and blew the intruders away. If the Second Amendment was banned, that story could have turned out incredibly different.
President Donald Trump promised to drain the swamp when he was elected as the Commander in Chief. He took another step towards achieving that goal thanks to this removal. It’s imperative that the President continue to do things like this. Eight years of Obama completely ruined this country with decisions like this. It’s time to take the country back.
