Despite the fact that President Donald Trump has been in office for nearly 100 days, many liberals still have no idea why he won. They refuse to blame themselves, opting instead to blame racism and sexism. Thankfully, some Democrats are wising up. According to reports, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) recently hired a top Republican official to help him as Chief of Staff. By doing so, it’s possible that he may be preparing for a Presidential run. His decision to work with someone from the opposite party shocked many liberals.

Earlier this week, Governor Cuomo hired Maria Comella, a well respected Republican who’s worked with former President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), to help him run the state government. Before accepting the job, she worked with the Democratic governor as an advisor.

Upon being hired, Comella told reporters, “Right now, it is important to be an active participant in our democratic process and political party matters less than the things we can accomplish when working together.” She added, “at a time of turmoil in Washington, I believe the states can and will play an important role, and Gov. Cuomo has the ability to find common ground when it’s needed and get things done.” Some were concerned about her crossing party lines. In an attempt to reassure them, she said, “the fact Gov. Cuomo is willing to listen to different viewpoints and work with people from the other side of the aisle is something we should welcome, and quite frankly, should want to see happen more often.”

After learning about her new job, Christie gave his complete support. “Maria Comella was a longtime, trusted advisor who assisted me in accomplishing many of the great things we have done in New Jersey during her six years with me,” he stated, adding, “I wish her the best of luck in her new assignment with Gov. Cuomo.”

Republican political strategist Kevin Madden also supported her decision. “It’s tough to see her cross lines, having worked with her on many Republican campaigns, but there is no denying she is absolutely formidable as a professional and as an operative,” he reasoned, concluding, “Maria understands policy, she understands people and she knows how to deliver. So, if you’re looking to build out a national team in the future, Maria is a hell of a building block to start with.”

Based on what Madden said, it’s likely that Cuomo hired her for political reasons. Many believe that Cuomo is considering running for President in 2020. If he does, working with Comella will definitely give him an advantage over other Democrats. She’d be able to help him sway voters on the fence, which would make a huge difference. However, it doesn’t really matter who the left puts forward against Trump. If they don’t get their act together, they don’t have a chance of winning. Despite this, it’s still extremely important that conservatives do everything they can to push liberals out of the government.

Although Comella is a longtime Republican, she was a part of the “never-Trump” movement and as a consequence, supported Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, during the last election. During the campaign, she referred to him as “a demagogue” and accused him of “preying on people’s loose anxieties.”

Specifically, she said, “Donald Trump has been a demagogue this whole time, preying on people’s anxieties with loose information and salacious rhetoric, drumming up fear and hatred of the ‘other,'” adding, “instead of trying anything remotely like unifying the country, we have a nominee who would rather pick fights because he views it as positive news coverage. It may make him media savvy, but it doesn’t make him qualified or ready to be president.” Lucky for her, Trump, and many of his supporters, are very forgiving. If she can get Cuomo to adopt more reasonable policies, it’s likely she’ll be absolved of her past wrongdoing.

Cuomo is not the only person to distance himself from the Democratic Party. Just recently, while discussing “hate speech” and censorship, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) pushed back against the authoritarian left’s campaign to silence conservative thinker Ann Coulter. During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, she said “you know, look, Ann Coulter has just gotten a much bigger platform because someone tried to deny her a chance to speak. My view is: let her speak and just don’t show up. If you don’t like it, don’t show up.”

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) also countered the narrative being promoted on the left. When he learned that her event will likely be canceled, he said, “I don’t like this. I don’t like it.” He added, “obviously Ann Coulter’s outrageous ― to my mind, off the wall. But you know, people have a right to give their two-cents-worth, give a speech, without fear of violence and intimidation.”

In addition to Warren and Sanders, liberal comedian Bill Maher also stood up for Coulter. He stated, “this goes on all over the country on campuses. They invite someone to speak, who is not exactly what liberals want to hear, and they want to shut her down. I feel like this is the liberals’ version of book burning. It’s got to stop.” He mentioned that this debate battle has already been fought. “This is why the Supreme Court said the Nazis could march in Skokie,” he explained. “They’re a hateful bunch – but that’s what the First Amendment means. It doesn’t mean just shut up, and agree with me.”

As the left continues to adopt increasingly less reasonable policies, more will defect and try to separate themselves from the party. Cuomo has shown that he’s willing to do this by hiring Comella. However, he’s not the only one. Warren, Sanders, and Maher have also pushed back again the Democratic Party. If liberals don’t learn from their mistakes, they’ll lose support. When they do, it’s important that Republicans embrace the defectors with open arms.
