God works in mysterious ways. Essentially, this was the message Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) provided on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday, where he revealed the worst news in a very emotional speech. Lamentably, he informed everyone he has been diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer.
In what has already become a viral moment of the U.S. politics, Brooks said that when anyone is elected official, missed votes require an explanation. Then, he explained that is why he decided to disclose this “otherwise very personal” and humbling matter.
The Republican said his doctor notified him of the diagnosis on Halloween night. Naturally, Brooks pointed out he felt an indescribable sensation, considering the terrible implications of this type of cancer. Soon after that horrible moment, he said he then phoned his wife Martha, who was welcoming trick-or-treaters back in Huntsville.
Struggling to hold back tears, Brooks explained that night was one the loneliest nights apart in their 41-year marriage. Naturally, this was a horrible episode that reveals the human side of a politician known for his unquestionable commitment to his ideas.
The Republican went on to say that losing the Alabama GOP Senate nomination against Roy Moore might have saved his life. After all, if he had won he might not have gone to the doctor for the correspondent tests. As he said, God works in mysterious ways.
Brooks said that he would not have time for his physical and PSA test if he had won the nomination. Basically, if he achieved this political victory, he would not have had the prostate biopsy. He assured he would not now know about his high-risk prostate cancer that requires immediate surgery.
The Republican told everyone that paradoxically, losing the Senate race may have saved his life after. Basically, a victory would have been one of the greatest moments in his political career, and probably the worst in his life. “Yes, God does work in mysterious ways,” he said.
Roy Moore ultimately prevailed to become the GOP nominee over Brooks, who is a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. In addition, Moore also defeated Senator Luther Strange, who is temporarily serving in the seat after it was vacated by Jeff Sessions, who is now the U.S. Attorney General.
While many believed Moore represented an easy victory in Alabama, he lost to Democrat Doug Jones on Tuesday night. Naturally, this surprising moment happened weeks after the Washington Post reported that Moore pursued sexual relationships with teenage girls while in his thirties.
In his emotional speech, Brook explained how prostate cancer runs in his ancestry. Apparently, both his father and grandfather were also diagnosed, which represented a very delicate situation for this family.
Fortunately, his father discovered his cancer early enough and he managed to live for another four decades. However, this wasn’t the same fate Brooks’ grandfather lived, given the fact that he learned about his cancer too late and couldn’t live long after.
The good news for Brooks is that a nuclear bone scan and a CT scan revealed no cancer beyond his prostate. As he explained in his speech, the most important thing to do in this situation is to detect the cancer before it spreads.
The Republican said that he is scheduled to undergo surgery this Friday, as well as a post-surgery medical procedure next week. As a result of this terrible problem, Brooks will miss critical expected House votes next week on the Republican tax overhaul. In addition, he will miss the end-of-year spending package to avert a government shutdown after December 22.
Martha and I are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support for our family during this difficult time and are optimistic for a full and speedy recovery. https://t.co/cW6cPPnUbh

On Twitter, Brooks wrote on Wednesday morning, ‘Martha and I are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support for our family during this difficult time and are optimistic for a full and speedy recovery.’
As reported by The Hill, it’s almost impossible that he would be medically cleared to travel. However, in the meantime, he expects to recuperate over the holidays with his family.
In his speech, Brooks said that is extremely important to take the necessary measures to prevent this cancer. Naturally, he explained that this is not only essential to the man who can suffer it, but also to his family.
Regardless the political differences anyone could have, this is time for wishing the best outcome to come.
