Much like ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter, the Black Panthers are a name synonymous with needless unrest, division, riots and strife. Oakland, California, is finding out how true that is as they are set to pay $2.2 million dollars “to settle a claim by ex-Black Panther leader Elaine Brown” that stemmed from a 2015 physical altercation by City Councilwoman Desley Brooks, according to SF Gate.
There is $1.2 million “in damages for Brown and her attorney’s fees.” This settlement is costing as much as 30 “entry-level” police officers, a staggering figure for an area that is already infamously crime-ridden.
The San Fransico Chronicle has written that this whole case has cost two years worth of pricey litigation. Brown’s first request for $1 million dollars was turned down, initially.
The expensive horror all began the day before Halloween on Oct. 30, 2015, at Everett and Jones Barbeque in Jack London Square. Brooks and Brown were locked in a heated argument about “affordable housing” and an urban farming project and Brooks was saying that “the project wouldn’t do enough for Oakland’s African American community.”
Brooks is said to have balled up her fists and knocked Brown backward. She flew over folding chairs a local restaurant, so forceful was the blow. Prosecutors did file charges even after a police report was filed and Brown underwent rotator cuff surgery.
“She was trying to win a political argument by a violent assault,” attested an attorney for Brown, Charles Bonner. “It was an outrageous breach of fiduciary duty to the taxpayers and her constituents.”
Brown, 75, led the Black Panthers from 1974 to 1977. She sued the city for “negligence, emotional distress, battery and elder abuse, on the grounds” that she was working in her “official capacity.“Judge Paul Herbert ruled back in April that the request for $3.2 million was too high and he brought the amount down to $1.2 million.
He also “ordered Brooks to pay $75,000 in punitive damages, down from the jury’s $550,000 verdict.”
“We are on the one hand grateful that the city finally resolved the case, but we are disappointed that the judge cut in half the jury’s studious verdict that was based on a thorough review of the evidence,” stated Bonner.
Herbert said that Brooks lied under oath and “exhibited no true remorse for her callous behavior.” He also said that jurors “allowed their feelings of anger and disbelief toward Ms. Brooks to unduly influence their determination of the damage amounts.”
What all of this points to is that what Maxine Waters (D-CA) and other Democrats have been endorsed recently (which is an end to civil politics) is nothing new in the lefty playbook.
These current seeds had been planted in 2015 (long before President Donald Trump, snowflakes).
