Joe Biden, yesterday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” said—very conditionally—that he will debate President Trump.
His statements came after Nancy Pelosi, who still apparently retains some mental function, practically begged him not to do it.
When asked about Pelosi’s plea, Biden said, “No. I am—as long as the commission continues down the street narrow as they have, I will debate him. I know for certain I will try—I will be a fact-checker on the floor while I am debating him.”
He added, “But, look, one thing that has gone on so far is the vast majority with notable exceptions of the news media have been fact-checking the things said during the convention. It’s just one lie after another, lie, lie, lie, one after another. But the debates will take place. It has been recommended to me including leading Republicans saying I should not debate Trump unless there’s a fact-checker on the ground saying that’s true, that’s not true. I think everybody knows this man has a somewhat pathological tendency not to tell the truth.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday said Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden should not debate President Trump before Election Day.
“I don’t think that there should be any debates,” Pelosi volunteered at the end of a press briefing.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she wanted debates scrapped to not “legitimize a conversation with [Trump]” because he lacks “any association with truth.”
She also said Biden should deny the president an opportunity to “act in a way that is beneath the dignity of the presidency.”
“I thought what he did in 2016 was disgraceful, stalking Hillary Clinton like that. I was disappointed that the press didn’t say, ‘Go back to your station,’” Pelosi said.
The leading Democrat’s call for Biden to sit out the debates comes after the former vice president’s campaign refused Trump’s request for more than three debates.
Trump often claims Biden, 77, is senile, and on Wednesday suggested that Biden be drug-tested before the debates to make sure he doesn’t use performance-enhancing drugs.
