When an artificial intelligence (AI) program deduced that killing all humans was a good course for the future, those who worried about the path ahead with such technologies were called conspiracy theorists who watched too much of the Sci-Fi channel. Everyone from Alex Jones to political commentator Mark Dice have warned of the coming threat and they were all called liars, alarmists, and were accused of merely seeking ratings.

Today, the Daily Star reports that the “conspiracy theorists” were totally correct as “gruesome footage” that was “put together by AI experts shows small drones descending on a classroom and killing pupils by blowing up their heads.” The video will be shown at the United Nations today and warns of “the danger of autonomous weapons that pick and destroy targets without instruction.”

While certainly wrong on a few topics, one of the best minds in modern physics is Dr. Stephen Hawking and he has warned of the same sort of outcome, so this is not something thought up by someone watching Ridley Scott movies and hoping to sell a few more newspapers.

Hawking has warned, “Unless we learn how to prepare for, and avoid the potential risks, AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization.”

Nations are all but thrilled that these weapons will soon see the battlefield and they are selling it to the masses as a way to save soldiers lives. However, not getting into wars in the first place (as most libertarians suggest) is the best way to save warriors’ lives, not dispatching robots that may or may not act as we wish.

A.I. scientist Stuart Russell said, “The technology illustrated in the film is simply an integration of existing capabilities. It is not science fiction. In fact, it is easier to achieve than self-driving cars, which require far higher standards of performance.”

That last part should send shivers down the spines of everyone who can understand the ramifications of the words spoken.

There are a lot of experts who are not the least bit afraid to suggest “that killer tech that makes its own decisions before killing by its own accord will be possible to design in the near-future.” People with such a high status do not risk their reputation on tinfoil hat philosophies, so everyone should be paying attention to this.

As for a robot army making us safer, that is also a lie being sold by the war profiteers according to Russell. He said, “Pursuing the development of lethal autonomous weapons would drastically reduce international, national, local, and personal security.”

Also, let us remember that Iran captured one of the most sophisticated drones and managed to reverse engineer it. Now they have a sophisticated drone(s), courtesy of former President Barack Obama (who, in this case, was not entirely to blame, to be fair).

This means that everyone needs to come together and demand that our leaders flee from any notion of the robot army. If we don’t, we may not be in a position to demand much of anything once the manufacturers of these machines get their way.
