Regardless of what clever words are used to sell nuclear technology to the masses, it is poison. Be the sales pitch for bomb-making to keep us safe or nuclear power plants to produce our energy, the end result is always the same. Radioactive toxins find a way out, they attack the DNA of every living thing, and cancers, birth deformities, and countless sicknesses become the norm.
This lesson is being taught to us again as Enewetak Atoll, site of nuclear missile testing during the Cold War, is leaking. As told in the Daily Star, the “equivalent to 2,000 Hiroshima blasts” were detonated there in the ten years from 1948 to 1958. It took over 8,000 people to clean up when this decade of death was over “shifting 110,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and debris into a blast crater” and entombing it in a concrete dome.
The trouble is that, while concrete lasts a long time by human standards, these radioactive toxins (some of which did not even exist before man created them) last for billions of years. As this dome starts to age, the threat is a real and as fresh as it was in 1948.
At “350 feet across and 16 inches thick,” this is no small slab of cement, either. Still, years of exposure are said to have taken their toll on the structure. Any rise in the sea level or a tempestuous storm could put everyone at risk in the state that the dome is in now.
The ocean does not dilute the poisons, a common lie sold to the masses in order to placate them. Therefore, even the most minute leaking will pose a significant threat, something that our leaders will downplay, according to history.
Paul Griego is one of the workers who cleaned the site and he said that the dome was really never that good at its role to start with. He talks about this when he says, “We were given an impossible task – cleaning up the radioactive fallout from 43 nuclear bombs. When I first arrived, the dome’s blast crater was open to the ocean – it continued to be full of sea water even after it was sealed off from the ocean.”
This is vital to learn because, prior to rampant bomb testing, cancer was not the common killer that we see today. It is almost universally accepted that these tests led to drastic changes in our food, DNA, and health. For example, everyone born since this time period and forever more has deadly strontium-90 in their body. This terrible radioactive poison is linked to bone cancer and other nightmares best not imagined.
“During my 10-hour work day, I witnessed the water level in the crater rise and lower as the tide came in and out,” the brave worker also said. Along with the Fukushima disaster in 2011, perhaps this is why all of the tuna and salmon caught in the Pacific Ocean shows signs of radioactivity.
As for why the dome is doing so poorly today, Griego added, “No attempt was made to drain the crater or line it before the radioactive waste was dumped into it. The coral that created the island is porous and the shock from numerous nuclear weapon tests had also fractured the coral.”
Adding to the horror, he stated, “From the first day forward, the water has flowed out of the lagoon with the tide, creating a gigantic radioactive toilet that is flushed about twice each day into the Pacific Ocean.” Frequent storms only made this problem far worse, too.
“I experienced the power of a typhoon while I was on Enewetak,” the cleanup worker confessed. “I believe the dome could be just one typhoon away from a breach.”
Likewise, Rama Schneider is someone who “drove radioactive waste from island to island in an amphibious vehicle during the cleanup.” There is no surprise to this worker why the dome is failing. “Standing on any island at that atoll is akin to standing inches above sea level – and that was in 1979.”
In addition, “The sea level and ground level are becoming more and more to be the same, and it doesn’t matter if we’re talking sea level rise, land subsidence or both,” he also declared. “Water will always win out over man-made objects.”
Girard Frank Bolton III was a draughtsman during his year and two months of work at the poisoned site. He drew up some of the construction plans and he is not as alarmed as some. He admits that radioactivity is escaping, and even foolishly said, “The dome was designed to slow the migration of radiation not to completely stop it.”
In other words, it is designed to make suicide happen in slow motion! Bolton added, “Also since concrete is porous, the wave action and tides are continuously pumping radioactive water in and out of the structure.”
This is not at all something to be cavalier about. Rather, this is an issue that greatly impacts the health of every person reading these words. It is time to demand that better attention and care be taken at this site and any other that houses the waste of mankind’s nuclear monsters.
It is also time to no make any more of them.
