DHS Secretary Issues Warning, 50 Potential Terrorists At U.S. Doorstep Every Week

Obama-era policies got us to this point.

Department of Homeland Security Chief, Kirstjen Nielsen said that officials nab about 50 people a week trying to get into America despite being on the terrorist watch list.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chief, Kirstjen Nielsen issued a dire warning this week. The country is under siege, dozens of potential terrorists are caught trying to sneak across the border every week.

“It’s critically important that we know who is entering the United States,” Nielsen said in a statement announcing additional security measures in the process used to vet refugees.

“These… measures will make it harder for bad actors to exploit our refugee program, and they will ensure we take a more risk-based approach to protecting the homeland.”

In the liberal la-la land where most Democrats dwell, migrants and refugees are a boon to society that comes with almost no drawbacks. They’ve purposefully blinded themselves to the violence and mayhem attending unchecked immigration.

During Nielsen’s speech at the Wilson Center, she focused on the numbers that Democrats typically ignore. Government officials identify about 50 travelers a week who are on the terrorist watch-list. If agents weren’t doing their job, hundreds, perhaps thousands of potential fanatics would now be living in the country.

The Trump administration’s efforts to keep the country safe are routinely derided by leftists.

“What’s been our theory of the case for 12 or 15 years following 9/11? Our theory of the case is the bad guys are out there, trying to come here. … What if [the bad guys are] already here?” Jane Holl Lute, the former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, asked last year.

Fighting terror on a global scale requires a multi-pronged approach. The existence of home-grown monsters doesn’t negate the need to defend the borders and strengthen our borders. Nielsen spoke about the previous administration’s incompetence in her speech.

President Trump instantly recognized the threat and set about trying to mitigate it.

Last January, he issued the following executive order beefing up the nation’s vetting process for refugees:

“It is the policy of the United States to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks… The screening and vetting protocols and procedures associated with the visa-issuance process and the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) play a crucial role in detecting foreign nationals who may commit, aid, or support acts of terrorism and in preventing those individuals from entering the United States. It is, therefore, the policy of the United States to improve the screening and vetting protocols and procedures.”

On a typical day, the government stops at least seven potential terrorists from entering the country.

Most of the terrorists who have committed attacks on American soil were in the country legally but undocumented migrants have also taken part of the carnage. According to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), of the 48 Islamic terrorists that inflicted damage on the country in the last ten years, 12 were in the country illegally.

The extremists were able to creep into the U.S. by taking advantage of the Obama administration’s laxness regarding immigration concerns.

The Atlantic’s Graeme Wood writes: “If the Islamic State intends to kill Americans by sending an Iraqi or Syrian to get a visa, they are doing it the hard way. Most of the attackers will blow themselves up out of frustration with the American immigration bureaucracy before they can ever reach American shores to blow themselves up near their intended targets.”

The flippant comment demonstrates how out of touch liberals are. The slow, inefficient immigration system is something to fear, not ridicule. The seven potential terrorists that the government rounds up every day isn’t an insignificant number when you consider that there could be dozens more that officials aren’t catching.

The government uses its own watchlist to keep track of terrorists. The people on the list are barred from receiving visas; in no condition are they to be allowed into the country. The database, which currently has information on millions of people, lists the suspect’s name, age, home country, and picture. The system is surprisingly low-tech. A simple disguise and a freshly-bought identity might be enough to fool it.

If the nation’s immigration concerns could be ironed out, it would significantly help the fight against terror. A lot of the bloodshed that occurred at the hands of Muslim extremists was inflicted by illegal immigrants.

The current vetting system is embarrassingly out of date. The updates being implemented by DHS Chief Nielsen should have been done a long time ago.
