The far-left cannot stand speech they disagree with. If a conservative wants to hear a fellow thinker speak at their school, liberals do everything they can to have the event canceled. If it’s not canceled, they go and disrupt the occasion, making it extremely difficult for others to express controversial ideas.
Many are worried that violence will break out at Ann Coulter’s upcoming event in Berkeley, and as a result, the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), where the event will be held, is trying to stop her from speaking. As a result, the students sponsoring the event are suing. Lawyers associated with the event have suggested that since they don’t expect the city to do their job, employing the National Guard may be necessary to make sure everyone is safe during the event. The authoritarian left has previously demonstrated that they’re willing to use violence and destruction to shut down speech they disagree with and the officials of Berkeley have proven that they will do nothing to stop the chaos. It’s not likely that her upcoming event will be any different.
During a recent interview, Harmeet Dhillon, the primary lawyer representing UCB College Republicans warned, “if the Mayor of Berkeley cannot maintain control of his city, the Governor should call the National Guard, because that’s a serious public health issue,” she warned. However, she didn’t think the situation is so bad that President Donald Trump needs to be involved. “The President declaring martial law in Berkeley so that Ann Coulter can speak is a bit extreme,” she reasoned, noting, “I’m not suggesting that would be an appropriate outcome, but I think the problem runs deeper than this Ann Coulter event.”
According to her, “what we have here is a shadowy policy that is…double secret; we didn’t find out about it until we were on the verge of a lawsuit.” She added, “we have a policy that’s going to be applied in the future to other speakers in the future unless it’s going to be brought out into the open, debated, and accommodated between the needs of the students who want to hear interesting speakers and the university which has an interest in the safety of all people.”
Dhillon argues that the ability for a university to use its “sole discretion” to ”unilaterally declare that certain facilities — all the desirable facilities are ‘not securable,’ when they were securable for Vicente Fox last week ‘fails’ the smell test of credibility.” She considers it a “double standard” and says it’s being used to discriminate against conservative speakers. She also pointed out that “security fees” do the same thing, telling reporters that liberals use them as a way to make the events unaffordable to conservatives interested in attending.
The lawsuit against the school began after the school decided to unexpectedly cancel Coulter’s speaking event on the 29th of April. According to the school, they canceled the event because they could not find a safe space for it to take place. Berkeley’s Vice Chancellors told the students organizing the talk that they were “unable to find a safe and suitable venue for your planned April 27 event featuring Ann Coulter,” adding, “in the wake of events surrounding the planned appearance by (right-wing speaker) Milo Yiannopoulos in February, as well as several riots which have occurred in recent weeks in the city of Berkeley, we have increased our scrutiny regarding the time and location of high-profile speakers so that these events can go forward unimpeded.”
However, their excuse is problematic because the university has been able to guarantee safe spaces for their liberal students. When Vicente Fox, the former President of Mexico, gave a talk on campus earlier in the year, he was given a safe place to speak and not required to pay ridiculous fees. Yet when conservatives like Coulter and Yiannopoulos want to speak, things are different. They’re forced to overcome absurd obstacles, and even when they do, they’re not guaranteed the ability to speak. When Yiannopoulos tried to speak to students at UCB, the authoritarian left crashed the event, smashing windows and setting fire to their campus, forcing him to cancel his event.
Coulter’s situation is similar. She claims that despite the fact that she went through countless obstacles to get the event set up, the administration still tried to prevent her from speaking. “I’ve acceded to all their silly demands, which they thought would end it. When I said, ‘yes, yes, yes,’ they canceled anyway. No more clear-cut proof that taxpayer-supported universities will not allow conservative speakers,” she argued. “If that’s banned, then no conservative can speak,” she added, noting, “meanwhile, corrupt banana republic leaders like Vicente Fox have the red carpet rolled out for them on the taxpayer’s dime.”
Surprisingly, several high-profile leftists came out in support of Coulter’s right to speak. When asked about the cancellation, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) replied, “I don’t like this. I don’t like it.” He reasoned, “obviously Ann Coulter’s outrageous ― to my mind, off the wall. But you know, people have a right to give their two-cents-worth, give a speech, without fear of violence and intimidation.”
Liberal Comedian Bill Maher, a long-time friend of Coulter, also spoke out against the far-left. He stated, “this goes on all over the country on campuses. They invite someone to speak, who is not exactly what liberals want to hear, and they want to shut her down. I feel like this is the liberals’ version of book burning. It’s got to stop.”
The mayor of Berkeley, Jesse Arreguin, may be partly responsible for some of the violence and destruction in the city. He may also be the reason why the police have failed to arrest those responsible for assault and vandalism. According to Breitbart, he’s a member of the far-left terrorist organization By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). Similar to the Islamic State, the group believes that violence and intimidation are necessary to further their political agenda. It’s imperative that law enforcement officials identify members of the group and hold their responsible for any crimes they commit.
It’s likely that the authoritarian left has already infiltrated the local government of Berkeley. Without opposition, they’ll find more naive millennials to brainwash. If it’s too unsafe for conservatives like Ann Coulter to speak at a college campus, then drastic measures must be taken. Anyone uses the terrorist tactics seen at other events must be held accountable for their actions.
