A man who has been trying to defend his First Amendment rights since 2012 is being attacked only a few months before his case is set to be argued before the Supreme Court. Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado was sued for declining to make a same-sex wedding cake five years ago. Now, Satanists are asking him to make cakes to celebrate the birth of Lucifer.
The strange request was emailed on September 30. The unknown person wrote, “I would like to get a quote on a birthday cake, for a special event.” The cake request was the head of Satan and an “upside down cross” under his head.
Apparently in Colorado, it isn’t enough to simply try to destroy a man’s business because of his personal beliefs, it’s necessary to continue to harass, bully, and abuse him.
In that state, the “public accommodation” law basically strips all businesses of their constitutional rights. It was passed in 2008 and essentially says that all public entities, businesses, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, clinics, and health clubs must accommodate LBGT persons.
Seeing an opportunity to make either a scandal or the ability to force their degenerate lifestyle on a person who morally objects to it, David Mullins and Charlie Craig asked the bakery to create a wedding cake for them.
It isn’t enough to simply boycott a store that doesn’t serve someone, LBGT rights activists and other liberals demand that everyone else alter their personal convictions to conform with their warped ones. Perhaps the reason these people are so determined to make their sexual orientation acceptable in society is because deep in their soul they know it’s wrong and want to salve their consciences.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) decided to take up the case for Mullins and Craig. The organization’s idea of civil rights means that everyone’s opinions matter except Christians and Jews. The Administrative Law Judge Robert Spencer ruled that Masterpiece Cakeshop had violated Colorado law and discriminated against the couple, “because of their sexual orientation.”
Fortunately, the non-profit Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal organization, has defended Phillips’ rights throughout the lengthy court process. Jeremy Tedesco, senior council with the group, told Daily Signal reporters that the new request “proves the danger of using these kinds of laws to force people in the artistic profession to create artwork that violates their beliefs.”
It wasn’t just one Satan cake that was asked for, another one depicting the fallen angel smoking a joint was requested a few weeks later.
“The request from the Satanists is essentially the same as the request that Jack Phillips received from the same-sex couple to create a cake that violates his beliefs, because in both instances, the requester can say the law covers my request. For the Satanists, they’re going to say it’s religious discrimination for you to say no to a cake that I’m requesting because of my protected status,” Tedesco added.
Fortunately for Phillips, the additional persecution may actually help his case in the Supreme Court.
“If we’re going to live in a world where these kinds of laws can be used to force people like Jack Phillips to create cakes that violate his beliefs about marriage, we’re also going to have to live in a world where people can be forced to create cakes celebrating Satan,” Tedesco said.
He added that people who “get caught up” in the same-sex protection idea shortsightedly miss the entire point. The issue on trial here is whether anyone can be forced to forgo his personal beliefs simply because someone else decides to demand it.
Would the same pressure be brought upon a Muslim bakery? Would it be asked to create a cake depicting satan? Absolutely not. Muslims are a protected class, along with LGBT groups and other fringe leftists. The request for the cake was offensive and designed to bully. It reads:
“I thought I would seek you out, to bake this cake since you appear to be a very moral person since you refused to bake a cake for same sex couples. And since religion is a protected class, I hope you will be willing to bake this cake, so my small group of religious friends can celebrate the birthday of Lucifer this coming November, just a few days after Halloween.”
Phillips explained that any sort of witchcraft or explicit sexuality is against his beliefs. Why are those beliefs not respected?
The fact remains that liberals do not recognize anyone’s rights but their own and many lie in wait to attack any sort of morality or uprightness wherever it is found.
