President Donald Trump wants questions added to better assess how many illegals are currently in the country, but Becerra worries it will result in the liberal state losing federal funding.
Joined by 19 other left-wing attorneys, Becerra’s coalition sent a letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Monday claiming they had a “sacred responsibility” to protect illegal aliens in the country.
“What the Trump Administration is requesting is not just alarming, it is illegal. The Constitution requires that every 10 years, we accurately count every person in our country, regardless of citizenship status,” the letter reason.
The letter added: “The California Department of Justice is putting President Trump on notice: if a citizenship question is added to the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau questionnaire, we are prepared to take any and all necessary legal action to protect a full and accurate Census.”
Many will find it deeply concerning that California is going this far to shield illegal immigrants from being deported by the Trump administration.
The Trump administration is requesting the Census Bureau to reverse an Obama-era rule and re-add the citizenship questions to the 2020 Census.
By including the question of whether someone is in the country legally or not will allow the administration to hand that information over to federal agencies.
It will also dramatically reduce the populations in left-leaning districts in blue states, giving Republicans the chance to win state legislature seats in liberal places like California.
Becerra and other top Democrats are freaking out about this, and their baseless threats to sue the Trump administration prove that.
Many Americans are upset that California continues to prioritize illegals over American citizens, and most would love to see Trump continue with his efforts to root out those who are in the country illegally.
