To many, the Antifa have always been considered a violent group. The state of New Jersey has labeled them a terrorist organization. There is even a petition on the White House website asking President Trump to do the same. However, all of this seems to be coming as a surprise to the liberal mayor of Berkeley, California. Jesse Arreguin finally stated yesterday that Antifa should be classified as a gang.
Berkeley is a favorite for the Antifa. Who could forget the infamous riots over right-wing author Milo Yiannopoulos when protesters caused upwards of $100,000 in property damage. Since then, the group has made the University of California campus in the city a no-go zone for anyone who they don’t agree with. This past weekend was no exception.
On Sunday a peaceful demonstration was occurring at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Civic Center Park. Then, the Antifa showed up. Videos show masked members jumping barriers and attacking Trump supporters. This is just another day for Antifa and yet the left has praised them and allowed the violence to continue. Mayor Arreguin’s statement is shocking compared to the normal response;
“I think we should classify them as a gang. They come dressed in uniforms. They have weapons, almost like a militia and I think we need to think about that in terms of our law enforcement approach.”
He continued by reaffirming that he does not support the far right but that it was time to “draw a line on the left as well.” Wasn’t that what President Trump said about Charlottesville that the left is still crying about?
The mayor also said, “I think we are going to have to think ‘big picture’ about what is the strategy for how we are going to deal with these violent elements on the left as well.” Meanwhile, most on the left are clinging to the old arguments. Sara Kershner with the National Lawyers Guild stated, “White supremacists and fascists are not welcome. And if the state is not going to protect us — and if they do not — then we are going to protect ourselves and welcome those who stand with us.”
While Arreguin’s statements show progress, he followed them up with a familiar answer, give in. He is asking UC Berkeley to cancel next month’s Free Speech Week which is scheduled to host Milo or at least attempt to.
“I believe that is the right thing to do,” said Arreguin. “And if they don’t do that, then they need to work with the city and potentially assist the city through resources to be able to adequately police what we know is going to be a large protest that will spill out onto the city streets.”
Those who have recognized the danger of Antifa a little longer than Mayor Arreguin think perhaps it is time to make a stand and stop letting the left dictate free speech in America.
