The city of Chicago, Illinois has a well-earned reputation as being one of the most violent cities in the United States. It is among the most dangerous regions in the country. It’s a city with a decades-long history of corruption, gang violence, and worse. For generations, the south and south-west sides of the city, in particular, have been a war zone.
Most of the time the shootings are criminals in the south side shooting other criminals in the area in gang or drug-related violence that occasionally impacts people in the wrong place at the wrong time. But in this most recent shooting in Chicago, it was an ATF agent, working with local police, who was shot in the head in the city’s ‘Back of the Yards’ neighborhood. Perhaps worst still, a suspect has neither been caught or even identified!
An agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) was shot around 3:15 a.m. on Friday morning. The shooting occurred near 44th Street and Hermitage Avenue, located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and not far from Davis Square Park.
According to officials, the agent was shot in the face during an investigation into illegal firearms. When pressed for information, they declined to offer more details.
The agent, a man in his late 20’s, was quickly moved to receive medical care.
According to radio chatter after the shooting, Chicago police originally intended to move the agent to a nearby fire station for emergency treatment, though they eventually changed their minds and took the officer to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, after realizing he likely suffered a head injury.
At this point, the agent, whose name was not released, is expected to make a full recovery, though he remains in critical condition.
Those who live near the shooting said that it sounded like a serious firefight, and that they lost count of the number of shots fired during the encounter.
A woman named Luz Campos, who lives a few houses down from where the shooting took place, was in her kitchen when she heard someone demand that they open the door, stating that the police were coming.
Campos stepped outside with a toddler she was tending, and saw multiple police cars rush past the home.
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, residents said that they heard many shots in quick succession, followed by silence.
In response to the shooting, the Chicago Police Department and the ATF have stepped-up their presence in the area, and are patrolling in force. At least two of the officials seen patrolling the area on Friday were high-ranking officials.
The agent, who was shot in the face is part of a strike force just less than a year old, which formed last June with the intent of cutting off the flow of illegal firearms into the city of Chicago.
The task force was also meant to crack down on recidivists, people who were repeatedly caught with illegal firearms and who never seemed to serve any jail time for it.
The task force consisted of 20 ATF agents, along with 20 officers from the CPD.
In the Back of the Yards neighborhood, the task force had been investigating gang-related shootings involving rifles, saying that from the fall of 2016 until the end of 2017, more than 140 people had been shot and 50 had been killed by gang members using various rifles.
In other words, the city of Chicago, on its own, accounts for between a third and a fourth of all murders committed with rifles in any given year.
The fact that an ATF and CPD task force lost a gunfight to gang members on the streets of Chicago does not inspire confidence in their ability to do much about the current state of the city.
It’s extremely disturbing that the suspect managed to shoot an ATF agent in the face, and then get away. At this point, the task force is not even saying that they have an idea of who the suspect is.
Chicago, Illinois, is a city disarmed by its leftist political leadership. As the city crumbles, that leadership has fought even harder to make sure citizens could not effectively defend themselves.
Now that Chicago has an absurdly high number of shootings and an entrenched criminal presence, the city is still fighting to limit citizens’ access to firearms. If an ATF task force cannot defend themselves from local criminals, what hope do the disarmed citizens have?
Chicago likes to blame its problems with firearm crimes on its neighbors, like the city of Gary, Indiana. But maybe if the city began to prosecute criminals with firearms, and let citizens protect themselves effectively, they’d find the criminal elements of the city were less able to prey on the good people of Chicago.
Of course, with leftists like Rahm Emanuel at the helm, that’s not likely to change any time soon.
