A man accused of molesting two underage relatives was mistakenly released from Rikers Island by the city’s Department of Correction — but was quickly caught, the agency said.
James Alvarez, 53, was being held on $150,000 bond on charges he allegedly forced his 8-year-old granddaughter into anal sex and molested a 7-year-old step-daughter.
But Department of Correction workers erroneously cut him loose from the Robert N. Davoren Center at 11: 55 p.m. Monday night, the agency admitted.
He was supposed to be transferred to Staten Island Criminal Court, according to police sources.
The bumbling Correction officers accidentally let him go on time served, according to sources.
He was arrested Tuesday evening, according to police sources.
Alvarez had been in custody since May 23 on the charges, according to records.
“Any DOC personnel involved will be suspended. The Department will immediately begin to retrain staff responsible for processing discharges,” said DOC spokesman Peter Thorne in a statement.
