A little less than two months ago, we saw the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States. Despite the fact that he had won a hard-fought election, the president-elect went right to work. He had a lot of work to do, including picking his cabinet members.
Trump’s picks were met with praise from the Republican members, as well as disdain from some Democratic Senators. With nearly every pick Trump made, Democrats were right there saying that they were going to do what they could to block the picks.
However, thanks to a law that was introduced by Harry Reid, dubbed the “nuclear option,” all of Trump’s picks only need a simple majority to be approved. Considering that Republicans have majority control in the Senate, it will be very hard to block the picks. That hasn’t stopped the Democrats though, as they have just targeted eight of Trump’s picks.
They are planning to stretch the confirmation process from days to even months All of this is an attempt to stop Trump from working with his cabinet when he gets into office. It’s pathetic and unruly, but this is what the Democrats are resorting to.
Democratic senators are also vowing to make good on their decision unless the nominees start disclosing personal financial information, according to The Washington Post. Why they need to see the financial information of cabinet picks is something that I will never understand. All this is doing is wasting time, which is what the Democrats want, considering they don’t have a chance to block the nominations.
As of right now, they are after eight people that Trump has selected. Currently Trump has four picks remaining. The primary people that the Democrats are going after include Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, Senator Jeff Sessions for attorney general, Representative Mick Mulvaney for the Office of Management and Budger, Betsy DeVos as the new education secretary, and Steve Mnuchin, a former Godlman Sachs executive to be treasury secretary.
Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “President-elect Trump is attempting to fill his rigged Cabinet with nominees that… have made billions off the industries they’d been tasked with regulating. If Republicans think they can quickly jam through a whole slate of nominees without a fair hearing process, they’re sorely mistaken.”
You really have a problem with people that have made money leading their respective industries? That just means they know how it works! Apparently if you’re successful in a field, that is a crime to the Democrats in the Senate.
Republicans, who are in control of the House and the Senate, plan to begin the confirmation hearings on Inauguration Day. As of right now, Republicans have a 52-48 majority over Democrats in the Senate. Since you only need 51 “yes’s” to have a full confirmation, it should be easy, but Democrats are not going to make it that easy.
While Democrats can use procedural moves to extend the debate on each of the nominees, they don’t have the power to use the filibuster to block the nominations. That was because of Reid’s “nuclear option” years ago. However they are still going to do what they can to drag the process out as long as possible.
That has drawn the ire of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He, as well as fellow Republicans, doesn’t like the Democrats’ plan in the slightest. He argued that they didn’t oppose President Obama’s nominations when he took office in 2008.
“Republicans and Democrats worked together and expeditiously to carefully consider his nominees,” a spokesman for McConnell said. “Sen. Schumer and others approved wholeheartedly of this approach at the time. So surely they won’t object to treating the incoming president’s nominees with the same courtesy and seriousness.”
However just think at who is leaving the White House. It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Obama was part of this plan to stop the movement as much as possible. This is the same president that has spoken out against Trump in the past. Consider this quote from May 6th of 2016.
“He has a long record that needs to be examined. And I think it’s important for us to take seriously the statements he’s made in the past.” Does that sound like someone that is going to let Trump go in without a fight? If that wasn’t enough, think of what Obama said in November.
“If you supported me in ’08, if you supported me in ’12, if you think that I’ve done a good job, if you believe that Michelle has done a good job – everything that we’ve done over the last eight years will be reversed with a Trump presidency.” Based on that it would appear that Obama is trying to save his rules and regulations from getting reversed.
That is reason enough for the still top Democrat to do what he can to stop Trump from getting in. If you don’t have a full cabinet, it would be hard to get some tasks accomplished. So by delaying the process, Obama and the other Democrats are doing what they can to help that out. What a great example the outgoing president is setting for future administrations.
Then again, anyone who would want to copy President Obama’s two terms in office is clearly delusional. This is the same president that had all restrictions lifted and sent ISIS some weapons in Syria. However it should be noted that these are not just any weapons; they were advanced weapons! Now our president has just sent our sworn enemy weapons that can kill Americans! Again, what a great example!
This is also the same president that wanted to nationalize a Muslim holiday. Thankfully he failed in the process, but Obama isn’t giving up anytime soon and actually called on Congress to grant him this final wish in the last days. It’s just another attempt by the outgoing president to get Islam respected!
Share this article to show that Democrats, led by Obama, are doing what they can to stop Trump’s cabinet members from joining him right away. While they can’t necessarily block the picks, the Democrats are going to do what they can to make sure they take such a long time that months of progress will get stopped. This is pettiness at a whole new level.
