When Rosalynd Harris went to her job at Busboys and Poets restaurant in Washington, D.C on January 23rd, she probably expected it to be a normal day. It would probably be a busy week all over the city due to the inauguration and the Women’s March crowds.
Harris, who is black, is one of many people who judge Trump supporters. She told reporters she was admittedly a bit prejudice when 3 male customers from Texas, who were white, sat down at her table and told her they were in town to support Trump.
Try doing an internet search with the terms “Donald Trump Supporters” and these are the types of headlines you will get;
- Why Do People Support Donald Trump?
- Who Are All These Trump Supporters?
- Measuring Donald Trump’s Supporters for Intolerance
- Donald Trump supporters talk of civil war
- Donald Trump Supporters Are Using Nazi Word ‘Lügenpresse’
This type of “news” is designed for a specific purpose; to incite mass hysteria and hatred towards anyone who dares to support our new President.
It has been proven time and again that most of the violence and vandalism that did occur this political season came from the liberals themselves. Trump supporters were often blamed in the media but the truth always came out, even if you couldn’t find it on CNN.
President Trump and his supporters have been accused of racism, sexism, bigotry, being Nazis, violence, and whatever else they could come up with. Some people rely on the news to inform them and this is what they have been bombarded with.
Even the Women’s March in D.C became an anti-Trump protest. Many people came simply for the opportunity to spread more hate against the newly sworn in President. Rosalynd Harris had actually attended the march herself, the weekend before this incident in the restaurant happened.
The men chatted with Harris throughout their meal, even complimenting her on her smile. At the end she gave them their $72.60 bill and thought nothing more of it.
You can probably imagine her joyful surprise when she collected the check after the men had left. She found that they left a heartwarming message and a generous tip.
The message read:
“We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people. Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless!”
Harris said she was overwhelmed. The message probably would have been enough to overcome a lot of her prejudice. The tip sealed the deal.
They left Harris a $450 tip on their $72.60 bill. In case you are counting, that is about 161% tip. Not bad for good service and a pretty smile.
Harris told reporters that the message was a great reminder. It is unwise to make assumptions. She added that many Americans want the country to come together regardless of politics.
It is a wonderful lesson for all of us; differences of opinion, race, or gender don’t have to mean hate, violence, or intolerance. We are all part of this country and we need to learn to work together despite our differences. In fact, our differences are what have always made America the unique and strong country we are.
Too many groups these days use hate as their first weapon. Free speech has never and should never include violence or segregation. The most effective civil rights leaders knew that to be the truth;
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
“Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.” – Mahatma Gandhi
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
It seems Rosalynd Harris learned that important lesson this week. She is leaps ahead of groups such as Black Lives Matter who work hard to create racism and the commit violence in the name of equality.
Everyone, no matter their political views can stand a review of this type of lesson, one that Harris got from an unlikely source. She is grateful and it seems that the act of kindness from three strangers was exactly what she needed. She is even rethinking the views of some of her liberal friends.
“You automatically assume if someone supports Trump that they have ideas about you, but [the customer is] more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange.”
The three men from Texas deserve thanks from all of America for this perfect reminder of what we all should strive to live each and every day.
